THE HISTORY OF
MARDI GRAS

Mardi Gras, meaning “Fat Tuesday” in French, is a centuries-old celebration marking the final day of indulgence before the Christian season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.

Its roots trace back to ancient Roman spring festivals, which were later adapted by the Catholic Church in medieval Europe. The tradition spread to France and then to French colonies, arriving in North America in the late 17th century.

Mardi Gras was first celebrated in what is now the United States in 1699 near present-day Louisiana. New Orleans became the heart of the celebration in the 1700s, where organized social clubs known as krewes began hosting elaborate parades and masked balls in the 19th century.

Today, Mardi Gras is best known for its vibrant parades, colorful beads, music, and festive spirit—especially in New Orleans—while remaining a blend of cultural, historical, and religious traditions celebrated worldwide.
